Day 3

Monday August 2nd, 2010

Today I couldn’t wait for my husband to get home from work so I could take off running. I threw some manicotti in the oven and was out the door. I really liked running. I had set some goals for today’s run. I wanted to shave a minute of my time and I really wanted to focus on pacing myself.

I am a very goal oriented person and I love numbers. I like to keep track of everything  so I can look back and see even the smallest bit of improvement. I like small goals that are reachable, yet still challenging enough that it requires effort to reach them.

I ran about halfway before my lungs decided to protest. I walked for about 30 seconds and then was back at it. I made it home in 23 minutes. I was thrilled, a whole 3 minutes faster. I was so proud of myself while I laid on the floor trying to recoup.

I jotted my info into my log on favorite run and realized I had just ran 11 minute miles. (I was running a little more than 2 miles ) My pace was about 5 mph. I couldn’t wait to run again and compare how I was doing.

Day 2

Sunday August 1st, 2010

Today I had no plans of running. It was going to be my prep day. I went to favorite run.com and mapped out a few routes of varying length deciding where to start. I planned on doing some cardio at home. I charged the battery on my mp3 player and did some research. Everything I read pretty much contradicted everything else. I was frustrated.

To top it off, my kids just seemed to be full of energy and using it in ways that seemed to drive me crazy. We ate supper and my daughter Madilyn bombarded me with non-stop questions about things that she either already knows the answer to or are just plain silly. It doesn’t really matter what she is asking because by the time I answer it she has already moved on to the next question and doesn’t hear the answer anyways.

I had put little Mario to bed and she was in her room resting. I just needed to get away, even if it was for only a half hour or so. I changed into gym shorts, a running top and my running shoes, grabbed my mp3 player and told my husband I was going for a run. I don’t really know how he reacted to my sudden urge for physical activity. I may have left him with a look of disbelief, but I didn’t really care.

I stretched, then looked at the clock and took off for a 2 mile run. Now, I know you are supposed to pace yourself and I should have been a bit more realistic about this. I knew I wasn’t going to be able just to run 2 miles with no prep work at all, but I didn’t care. It felt really good.

For once I was in my own little world with my favorite songs blaring in my ears and not having to worry about housework, kids, or getting food on the table. For 2 miles there was nothing but the road ahead of me. It was euphoric.

Well, until I got a bout a half mile in and my lungs were actively protesting this sudden bout of physical activity. They were begging for a cigarette. I slowed to a brisk walk and managed that for a block before mentally reprimanding myself for giving up already and got back to running. My run carried on like this,  running as far as I could then walking a block and doing it all again.

I had never been so happy to see my house. I looked at the time then collapsed on my living room floor. My face was red and I was sweating like never before. But I felt relief. It took me 26 minutes to run 2 miles and I knew I could do this.

Day 1

Saturday July 31st, 2010

A couple months back I created a “bucket list” containing 100 things I want to do in my life. Recently I got to cross five things off and it encourage me to see what else I could achieve. After flipping through the list I came to running a 5k. I knew their was one coming up so I figured hey why not.

You have to understand running has never been my thing. It always kind of seemed pointless to me. I firmly believed that running was something only done if you were being chased. To run 3.1 miles for entertainment seemed so out of my realm.

This is where you may be wondering how running a 5k landed on my list. I am an avid fan of Biggest Looser. They always finish the season with the contestants running a marathon. After watching so many seasons , one thing always remains the same. It is the contestants sense of pride and accomplishment in finishing and leaving it all on the road. I wanted to feel that, and while the 3.1 miles is not anything compared to the 26.1 mile marathon. It is a huge step for me.

I am literally stepping out of my comfort zone and doing this.  I printed off my application, filled it in and mailed it. There is no turning back. Now, all that is left to do is to lace up my running shoes and get out there on the road. The race is on September 4th, wish me luck!
